A bill of lading with no written remarks by the carrier about the cargo or packaging being damaged or defective at the time of loading.
Technical Under UCP 600 Article 27, a clean bill of lading is one bearing no clause or notation expressly declaring a defective condition of the goods or their packaging; banks will not accept bills that are not clean unless expressly allowed.
Example The bank refused the document because the bill of lading had a notation of torn bags, rendering it unclean.
Etymology #
The adjective 'clean' comes from Middle English to mean 'unblemished' — carried over to shipping documents that have no adverse comments.
